Horse riding plays an important part in Queensland’s heritage and culture. Formed management roads throughout national parks been used for horse riding.
Some of these trails form part of the South-East Queensland horse riding trail network, which are narrow strips of forest reserve tenure within forest that is, or is about to change to national park. Many of these forest reserves are valued by horse riders as safe, scenic places to ride on multi-use trails in designated State Forests, forest reserves.
Horse riding is generally allowed on State forests, lands managed by Forestry Plantations Queensland (subject to operational requirements) and on some conservation parks where indicated by regulatory signage.
A special permit is generally not required for riding on the SEQ horse riding trail network, unless it is a commercial activity, an organised group activity or a competitive event.
If you think a permit is required or want more information contact
Queensland Dept of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing .
It is imperative that when riding horses in the forest, to ride responsibly on identified trails as this will determine riders’ future access to trails.
