The initial Awareness Program for the Biosecurity Act focused on the nature of the changes from existing legislation, the reasons for those changes and benefits to Queensland businesses. The Awareness Program has also focused on ensuring interested parties are familiar with the new legislation including powers, regulatory tools and their obligations and rights.

The next stage of the Program is to incorporate details of how the Act will operate on a day-to-day basis, and how we can all support and shape the change process. Planning is now underway to develop the Biosecurity Regulation, which will detail the biosecurity rights and obligations of people and businesses in Queensland.

Implementation of the Act will be a significant task. It will involve not only development of a new Biosecurity Regulation, but also education on the shared responsibility and new obligations for biosecurity in Queensland.  Click here for the latest update provided 8 April 2014.

The Biosecurity Bill was passed by Parliament on the 6th of March 2014.
